In 1899 a group of Aspen citizens purchased 17 acres northwest of town and formed Red Butte Cemetery Association to serve the local community. Since that time, a volunteer citizens board of directors has managed the cemetery’s services, including perpetual care of the plots and maintenance of the grounds.
Red Butte Cemetery and its beautiful property are community treasures, and the City of Aspen has recognized the property’s unique value with historic designation. The cemetery houses markers dating from the 19th century, graves that were relocated to Red Butte after its creation.
The Cemetery Association has 4,472 developed plots and many plots are still available. The Association also owns sufficient land to develop an additional 2,400 plots
